Description

2011 Pinot Noir, Thomson Vineyard (Napa, Carneros)

Few wines reflect terroir more than Pinot Noir. Carneros Pinots are noted for their delicate fruit and earthy complexity. Lighter-bodied that other California versions, a Carneros Pinot makes a perfect food partner with mouthwatering acids, silky tannins, and elegant texture.

Delicate cherry and red raspberry fruit open this light-bodied but silky Pinot. Complex hints of graphite, cedar, white pepper, and herb give it an earthy complement. Acids are crisp and alcohol modest, making it a beautiful dinner companion.

VINTAGE NOTES

2011 was one of the coolest growing seasons on record. An unseasonably wet spring ushered in cool temperatures that lasted all summer and well into the fall. We were fortunate to harvest just in advance of heavy early rainstorms.

THE VINEYARD

The Carneros AVA is a study in contrasting climate and style. The Thomson family's (George “the farmer” and “millennial daughter” Jennifer) vineyard is cool, windy, and often blanketed in fog from nearby San Francisco Bay. By growing a California Pinot classic, the deep, earthy Martini clone, and a French newcomer, bright, crisp clone 667, the land and climate helps their fruit retain bright acidity and minerality.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Pinot Noir deserves sumptuous food. Pair with pate', duck (confit is particularly tasty), salmon, or a rich mushroom risotto.
