Description

We're often asked: “How do you find your grapes?” This is always an interesting question to answer as they're not exactly growing in our back yard. There's usually an element of serendipity involved--sometimes we get recommendations from our current growers or we hear about a vineyard from other winemakers (yes, it's that collegial 'round here). As in most things, it's all about who you know. So, when we started exploring Pinot Noir terroir and the Santa Cruz Mountains moved high on our list, one of our classmates from U. C. Davis who had a beautiful vineyard high in the hills south of Los Gatos was our first call. Fortunately, his Pinot was available.

Where many of the North Coast's Pinot Noirs offer bright strawberry and raspberry notes, Santa Cruz Mountain Pinot's tend to be deep, earthy, and spicy. The 2012 is no exception, with raspberry notes that tend more to red than black, aromas of forest floor and smoke, and a hint of clove or licorice to finish.

THE VINEYARD

Perched on a 2600 ft. ridge looking southwest over Monterey Bay, this vineyard is perfect Pinot terroir. At this elevation, vines are reliably above the fog line, with sunlight kissing every row. Cool ocean breezes dance across the deep Monterey fog bank, however, ensuring that the vineyard days are never too hot and that nights are blissfully cool.

Vineyard plantings include Pinot Noir clones 115 (deep purple, rich aromatics, excellent for longevity) 667 (well structured, lengthy finish), and 777 (round tannins, deep fruit aroma and flavor).

FOOD PAIRINGS

Classic Pinot Noir deserves classic food. This Pinot is light enough to complement rich, smoky grilled salmon but is equally at home with thinly sliced carpaccio with a touch of truffle oil.
