Rhone blends are like calico cats--multi-hued, spicy, and complex--so we thought it purr-fect to name this blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah for our much-missed Lola. Great with herb-crusted lamb or pork.
Description

 Grenache/ Mourvedre/ Syrah

What do a calico cat and a red wine blend have in common? Us! Seriously.

When we were garagistes, we blended leftover Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre into a wine we named “Calico Cat” – partially because of its uncertain formulation but also for our great, fluffy calico, Lola.

Lola was rescued from the highway with two broken legs and a whole lot of attitude, keeping her “brothers” in line with a powerful right paw “bonk” to the top of their heads. Sadly, we bade her farewell at the beginning of the 2009 crush; she lives on in our Rhône-style blend.

Red fruit-driven, this blend has a “bonk” of aroma and flavor that catches you right away. It’s loaded with strawberry, raspberry, and black cherry. And, just like Lola’s attitude, it’s intense! Herbal and mineral notes follow the onslaught of berries. Flavors are dominated by strawberry and raspberry, too. There’s a savory herbal note with red and black licorice on the finish. There’s a richness throughout from Syrah and a bit of pepper, too. It’s a big sassy girl – much like its namesake.

THE VINEYARD

Cooper Ranch is set in the rolling hills outside of Plymouth, CA – full of Amador's rocky, red granite soil. The Cooper Grenache is head trained, a strategy that, while labor intensive, concentrates flavors while maintaining bright acids; other varieties are conventionally trellised. Warm days and cool nights help build lush fruit flavors while preserving crisp acidity.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Like our calico, Lola, this wine is not shy. Nor should you be when thinking about what foods to pair with it. A salty slice of ham is perfect with Cuvée Lola's big fruit flavors. Think Middle Eastern – spicy eggplant, chick peas or roasted lamb. Try lobster or crab with plenty of melted butter for dipping. For simple suppers, a hearty bean or lentil soup is an ideal companion that will make you purr.
