In Italy, Zinfandel is known by a number of aliases. Two well-know ones are Primitivo di Gioia (joyful, wild gem) and Primitivo di Locale (a neighborhood original). Our last Zin/ Petite Sirah, West O, was a megahit with the our locals, so: Gioia Locale (Joy-uh Lo-cali). Rich and spicy it's ready for barbecue or stews.

2012 Gioia Locale (Lodi)

In Italy, Zinfandel is known by a number of aliases. Two well-know ones are Primitivo di Gioia—joyful, wild gem—and Primitivo di Locale—a neighborhood original. Our blend of Zin and Petite Sirah is a megahit with the locals—and a real gem—so a marriage of the names (and two great grapes) was only fitting.

Gioia Locale (just say “Joy-uh Low-cali”) is rich and deep, much like a dark chocolate-covered dried cherry. At the same time, it's spicy and a little mysterious: there's a zip of flavor but is it cinnamon or pepper or an Asian spice? Hmm...better have another sip to try to sort it out.

VINTAGE NOTES

2012 was a Mary Poppins year: practically perfect in every way. Moderate temperatures and full sun without extreme heat paired with cool Delta evenings to bring mature flavors with mouthwatering crispness.

THE VINEYARDS

This is old school Zinfandel. Old vines—more than 40 years old—grow on their own roots—a classic Lodi viticultural method that moderates vigor and enhances spicy flavors. Vineyards are certified sustainable, demonstrating good stewardship to both the land and the community.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Pair Gioia Locale with barbecues and sunshine or warm winter stews.. Cumin-spiced Santa Fe pork stew with black beans and sweet potatoes is a natural. So is sweet, piquant barbecued tofu from one of Oakland's best 'cue houses. Slow smoked brisket or juicy pulled pork is perfect. If it's rich, savory, and a little smoky, pour a glass and let's eat!
