We love our Cabs in a classic style with rich fruit and elegant structure. Redwood Valley's Gusto Vineyard is a wonderful location for growing grapes for just that style.
Description

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Gusto Vineyard (Mendocino)

We speculate often that Gusto Vineyard must have been named in honor of fourth-generation grape grower Maria Martinson—a woman with tremendous energy and spark. Grounded by husband Rusty's gentle demeanor, they're a perfectly balanced couple—much like the grapes they grow.

Like the Martinsons, our Cabernet is beautifully balanced in a classic style. Bright right red cherry and deep, rich redcurrant notes are paired with mouthwatering acidity. Tannins are round and restrained with a hint of coffee and tobacco in structure. Underlying bright fruit and mellow tannins is the briariness of a blackberry bramble—just that hint of the vine that gives Cabernet its special varietal quality.

VINTAGE NOTES

2013 brought perfect growing conditions to Mendocino County. A dry winter followed by a wet spring moved into a summer with moderate temperatures and full sun without extreme heat. Sunshine, paired with cool Mendocino evenings, yielded grapes with mature flavors but mouthwatering crispness.

THE VINEYARD

At 1000 feet in Mendocino's Redwood Valley's rolling hills and rocky red soils, Maria and Rusty Martinson's Testa Ranch is a picture perfect setting for growing stellar hillside Cabernet Sauvignon. The Gusto Vineyard there has been farmed for five generations of Maria's family using dry farming and organic practices—traditions that yield Cabernet with great nuance and complexity.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Urban Legend's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic—as is the food we love to pair with it. A thick, juicy slice of prime rib is a natural foil for its refined tannins; a filet or a smoky pork chop accents its beautiful cherry fruit. But, don't forget that all-American favorite, the burger: UL Cabernet makes simple bistro fare a special event.
