Urban Legends thrive on bubbles -crisp scintillating wines that pop
Description

Urban Legend thrives on bubbles—crisp scintillating wines that pop. We always wanted to create a wine with fizz, but that’s all about the stars coming right—the right grapes, the right color, the right flavor. Maybe finding those grapes was a myth.

2017 brought it all together with a Barbera harvest that was lighter and crisper but, while delicate, was beautifully fruity. Leggera—”light” in Italian—is just the trick, we think, to start your own myth. Don’t be led astray by its light, almost ghostly, shade of pink. Its ultrapremium Barbera grapes don’t give up their secrets—or color. Leggera does, however, issue a siren’s call with each glittery, peachy, strawberry sip.

VINTAGE NOTES

California returned to more typical weather for 2016-7 with more than adequate rain. Dry-farmed vineyards like Holland Landing benefited from abundant ground water. Summer’s end was notable for a severe heat wave throughout the state that slowed grape maturation. Patience was in order as we waited for the vines to shake off the effects of the heat to bring grapes to maturity.

THE VINEYARDS

Ask Clarksburg locals about vineyard stewardship, and they’ll tell you to see Papa Steve, Stephen, and Mike Heringer, whose 20-acre Barbera vineyard is certified sustainable. No surprise there—they’ve been farming this land for six generations. The unique micro-climate of the sixteen-mile-long, eight-mile-wide Clarksburg appellation has warm summer days that are a bit cooler than nearby Sacramento. Afternoon breezes from San Francisco Bay cool the vines, preserving acidity as the grapes ripen.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Leggera is “must” with Asian food. It’s also great with barbecued, spice-rubbed chicken or Spanish tapas. There’s enough acidity to stand up to the richness of salmon or creamy, stuffed eggs. Or, pair simply with a flute by the pool—a perfect pair for a perfect moment.
